Big changes are coming to Kenya’s education system! In 2026, the first CBC Junior Secondary School (JSS) students will transition to Senior Secondary School (SSS)—but how will it work? From national assessments to choosing career-focused pathways, we break down everything you need to know about this exciting milestone. Whether you're a parent, teacher, or student, this guide will help you navigate
The first CBC cohort joined Junior Secondary School (JSS) in January 2023 after completing Grade 6. JSS runs for three years (Grades 7, 8, and 9), and students are exposed to a broad curriculum designed to build foundational knowledge and skills.
At the end of Grade 9, students will be assessed to determine their readiness for Senior Secondary School (SSS).
The transition to SSS will be guided by a national assessment administered by the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC). Unlike the former KCPE, this assessment will not be a one-time high-stakes exam but will include:
Continuous Assessment Tests (CATs): These are school-based assessments conducted throughout Grades 7, 8, and 9.
Summative Assessment: A final exam at the end of Grade 9 to evaluate the learner’s mastery of core competencies.
The results of this assessment will help guide students in choosing their preferred Senior Secondary pathway.
One of the most exciting aspects of the CBC is the flexibility it offers students to pursue their interests and talents. At the end of Grade 9, students will select one of three pathways for Senior Secondary School (Grades 10, 11, and 12):
For students interested in careers like engineering, medicine, architecture, or computer science.
Compulsory Subjects: Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and other STEM-related subjects.
This pathway is ideal for learners who excel in sciences and mathematics.
For students interested in careers like law, journalism, arts, music, or literature.
Optional Subjects: Mathematics is optional, depending on the learner’s career goals.
This pathway focuses on humanities, social sciences, and creative arts.
For students interested in technical and vocational careers like plumbing, carpentry, fashion design, or hospitality.
Optional Subjects: Mathematics may be optional or required, depending on the specific course.
This pathway emphasizes hands-on skills and practical training.
After the Grade 9 national assessment, students will be placed into Senior Secondary Schools based on:
Their performance in the assessment.
Their chosen pathway (STEM, Social Sciences, or TVET).
The availability of spaces in schools offering their preferred pathway.
The placement process will be managed by the Ministry of Education to ensure fairness and transparency.
Senior Secondary School (SSS) will run for three years (Grades 10, 11, and 12). During this time, students will focus on their chosen pathway and take subjects relevant to their career aspirations.
At the end of Grade 12, students will sit for a national examination (replacing the former KCSE) to assess their readiness for tertiary education or the job market.
Parents and teachers play a critical role in ensuring a smooth transition for students. Here’s how they can help:
Provide Career Guidance: Help students identify their strengths, interests, and career goals.
Offer Support: Encourage students to take their studies seriously and prepare for the Grade 9 assessment.
Stay Informed: Keep up with updates from the Ministry of Education to understand the transition process.
2023: The first CBC cohort completed Grade 6 and transitioned to Junior Secondary School (JSS) in January 2023.
2026: The first CBC JSS cohort will complete Grade 9 and transition to Senior Secondary School (SSS) in January 2026.
The transition from JSS to SSS is a significant milestone in the CBC system. It marks the point where students begin to specialize in their areas of interest, setting the stage for their future careers. By offering multiple pathways, the CBC ensures that every learner has the opportunity to thrive, regardless of their strengths or career aspirations.
The transition of CBC students to Senior Secondary School in 2026 is a well-thought-out process designed to empower learners and prepare them for the future. Whether your child is passionate about science, arts, or technical skills, the CBC system provides a pathway for them to succeed.
