KIMANI ICHUNG’WAH’S INTERVIEW ON AL JAZEERA’S 'HEAD TO HEAD'

KIMANI ICHUNG’WAH’S INTERVIEW ON AL JAZEERA’S 'HEAD TO HEAD'

On February 27, 2025, National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung'wah appeared on Al Jazeera's 'Head to Head' program, where he engaged in a heated discussion with host Mehdi Hasan. The interview touched on key issues such as police brutality, enforced disappearances, corruption, government performance, and his personal wealth.

1. Police Brutality and Enforced Disappearances

Ichung’wah dismissed allegations that the Kenyan government was involved in enforced disappearances, calling them conspiracies. He specifically addressed claims made by Public Service Cabinet Secretary Justin Muturi, who had alleged that his son was abducted by the National Intelligence Service (NIS) during the 2024 protests.

“I tell you emphatically, he has reasons to lie. He's playing politics with a very unfortunate incident,” Ichung'wah stated. He also implied that Muturi might soon be removed from office, saying, "Justin Muturi knows he's probably on his way out."

2. Corruption and Personal Wealth

When questioned about corruption and his personal net worth, Ichung'wah disclosed that his wealth is approximately Ksh.1 billion (about $7.7 million USD), refuting claims that he is worth Ksh.5 billion. He attributed his fortune to business ventures and previous employment rather than his political earnings.

Ichung’wah criticized fellow MPs who flaunt their wealth, stating, "It is rather unfortunate. I always advise them against such displays."

3. Government Performance and Unfulfilled Promises

Mehdi Hasan challenged Ichung'wah on the Kenya Kwanza administration's performance, citing a report by Mzalendo (a parliamentary watchdog) that indicated only 14 out of 280 government promises had been fulfilled.

Ichung'wah did not confirm the exact numbers, responding, "I will not give you a straight answer of two or ten," but defended the government's progress, asserting that their manifesto is being implemented gradually and should not be judged prematurely.

4. Public Perception and Social Media Criticism

Addressing public criticism and social media attacks, Ichung'wah responded to online claims that he is "President William Ruto’s wife," a term used to mock his close relationship with the president. He dismissed the nickname, stating, "I am less concerned with what people say online. I have to do my work and do it to the best of my ability."

Conclusion

The interview highlighted a tense exchange between Ichung'wah and Mehdi Hasan, with the Kenyan politician defending the government’s record and his personal conduct amidst tough questioning.
