TSC Prioritizes Local Teachers in 2,014 Replacement Vacancies
The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has launched a fresh recruitment drive to fill 2,014 teaching vacancies left by natural attrition. What makes this drive different is the new directive to prioritize local teachers—a move that has sparked both praise and controversy across Kenya’s education sector.
🟢 Local First Hiring Policy
TSC has instructed its Sub County Directors and vetting panels to give first priority to qualified teachers from the sub-county where the vacancy exists. If no eligible applicants are found, the selection will extend progressively to:
- The entire county
- The region
- Other counties
This structured localization aims to empower communities by employing their own and minimizing staffing gaps in remote and underserved schools.
📋 Who Can Apply?
Applicants must meet the following minimum requirements:
- Primary school positions: P1 certificate and TSC registration
- Junior & senior secondary positions: At least a diploma in education, a C+ in KCSE, and two teaching subjects
- All applicants: Must be Kenyan citizens and registered with the TSC
💻 Application Deadline & Process
All applications must be submitted online via the TSC portal by May 19, 2025. Manual applications are not accepted.
🔍 Public Reactions
While the move to prioritize local teachers has been welcomed by many county leaders and unemployed graduates, it has also raised concerns about fairness. Some stakeholders argue this might disadvantage better-qualified teachers from other regions and affect merit-based hiring.
Nonetheless, this policy aligns with TSC’s strategic goal to ensure equitable distribution of teachers and bolster employment at the grassroots level.
